Complex Youth Theatre presents their devised show, “PORTSROCK”. Funded as part of the Youth in Action project (Leargas) and with the support of DCC, CDYSB, The Complex, An SIol and local senior citizens groups, this exciting project explores the legacy of past stories, mythical and factual. “PORTSROCK”, is a historic fishing village that has had its fair share of doom and gloom, especially once a year when a legendary myth hangs heavily over the local people. In its distant past the village was rich with good luck stories but has been unable to break free for fear of reputation, prejudice and rejection. This year is going to be different as some of the young people of “PORTSROCK” defy all the usual advice and battle the odds to challenge this myth. Will they succeed and will their positive energy conquer the negativity of the past? Join us and find out!

And he’d say ‘Kiss my fist’.” A man and a woman discuss her sexual history. She reveals the violent details of a past which may or may not actually belong to her, evoking images ripped from a century of mediatised atrocity. The visceral impact of Pinter’s language is foregrounded in rising director Sarah Finlay’s vivid production of this darkly poetic and arresting drama. “Ashes to Ashes is an extraordinarily powerful work: elusive, mesmeric, disturbing” -Michael Billington -By kind permission of Samuel French LTD Fast Intent is currently an unfunded (amateur) company. Fast Intent believes in a theatre that is engaging, inspiring, entertaining and above all, human. In our work, we strive for clarity, with a keen attention to detail. We don’t have an agenda. We want to tell you stories.
Complex Productions Present OUR CLASS (a reading) Friday 17th June 2011, 4.30pm Free Entry The Complex present a reading of ‘Our Class’ by Tadeusz Slobodzianek, in a version by Ryan Craig this Friday at 4.30pm. A Polish play about a class of friends in 1925, Jewish and Catholic, who share the progression of their lives with us, whilst their country endures repeated invasions by Russians and Nazis and experiences a threat to its national spirit with degrading, despicable consequences to its people, told through the actions of these indivduals. It was first produced in 2009 at The National Theatre, London and we would like to invite you to come and join us for it’s first outing in Ireland, and to hear your reactions. There is no charge for entry but please try to bring in a Polish friend! Read The Guardian review of The National Theatre, London’s recent production here.

Iron’, by ‘one of Scotland’s brightest dramatists’ (The Times) is a psychological thriller about a woman, serving life for murdering her husband. After sixteen years of estrangement, mother and daughter meet on the impulse of the daughter. Their relationship intensifies as Josie becomes committed to reopening her mother’s case, causing events to take a chilling turn. Set in a prison, this play is a fascinating insight into the effects of incarceration on both prisoners and their families and prejudices we bring to issues of mental health and stability.

When Antonio borrows the sum of 3000 ducats to provide for his friend Bassanio’s trip to Belmont, he anticipates the safe arrival of his many ships to port and their associated good fortune, “but ships are but boards, sailors but men; there be land rats, and water rats, water thieves and land thieves”. In a world without NAMA, when the loan goes bad is there anything to stop the Jew from claiming his ‘pound of flesh’? And in the shadow of Shylock’s knife can Bassanio claim his prize in the shape of fair Portia? A classic Shakespearean tale of love and hate with a moral all too familiar in the current clime- “all that glistens is not gold”, The Merchant of Venice is a timely lesson for us all.
