Pianist, composer, and writer Ethan Iverson is best known as a founding member of The Bad Plus, a pioneering group alongside Reid Anderson and David King. The New York Times hailed TBP as “Better than anyone at melding the sensibilities of post-60’s jazz and indie rock.” Over the course of his 17 years with the group, Iverson helped take TBP to iconic venues like the Village Vanguard, Carnegie Hall, and Bonnaroo, while collaborating with musical luminaries such as Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell, and the Mark Morris Dance Group. The ensemble also delivered a faithful reimagining of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and a groundbreaking take on Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction.
After his departure from TBP, Iverson’s creative output has remained prolific. In 2017, he co-curated a major centennial tribute to Thelonious Monk at Duke University and premiered the full-length work Pepperland with the Mark Morris Dance Group. The following year, Iverson debuted an original piano concerto with the American Composers Orchestra and released a duo album with saxophonist Mark Turner on ECM. In 2019, he teamed up with trumpeter Tom Harrell for Common Practice (ECM), a live recording of standards from the Village Vanguard. 2021 saw the release of Bud Powell in the 21st Century, a deep reexamination of the bebop legend, which earned a feature on the cover of DownBeat. In 2022, Iverson released Every Note is True on Blue Note, an album of original compositions recorded in trio with Larry Grenadier and Jack DeJohnette.
