Give Us the Night Campaign Bring 'Square Roots' to The Depot

Give Us the Night, a group of nightlife professionals campaigning for positive changes to nightlife in Ireland, with particular regard to music venues, today bring their event 'Square Roots' to The Complex.

Square Roots is an exploration into Cultural Spacemaking and Placemaking, consisting of international keynote presentations, panel talks and a studio-based workshop. Take a look at the agenda below to see some of the incredible speakers, including: Dimitri Hegemann of Tresor Berlin, author and cultural policy thinker Shain Shapiro, and cultural spacemaker and 1/4 of DJ collective Tender, Bull Horris.

Read on for more information about the event's conception and Give Us the Night below:

"The loss of creative opportunities in Ireland has come in tandem with the steady loss of creative spaces and venues.

The new built environment must champion creativity not only for the good of local practitioners, but for the international reputation of cities like Dublin as hotbeds of cultural activity that promote artistic excellence.

Installing infrastructure that will develop and sustain career paths within Ireland is vital to stemming the brain drain within our creative community.

Square Roots will assemble a host of key figures in Cultural Spacemaking and Placemaking, alongside stakeholders across the cultural, arts and construction sectors."

Give Us The Night is a community-run organisation, formed in 2004. Its primary aim was, and still is, to reform Irish licensing law and diversify the night-time economy.

Over time its mission has broadened, and a large part of its work is focused on the provision of cultural space, in light of the steady loss of creative spaces and performance venues around Ireland.

It has most recently been the lead sectoral representative on the Government’s Night-time Economy Taskforce and Implementation Group, as well as a member of Dublin City Council’s Arts SPC (and advisory sub-group).

Square Roots is its latest offering to the conversation around the public’s access to social and cultural space.
