The open call for the MLP x The Complex Writer in Residence 2025 is now live. Applications are open here.
As part of the residency, current writer-in-residence Julie Morrissy has written Seeing God: A Response to GOD by Bea McMahon and Conor McFeely. The piece reflects on the exhibition’s exploration of belief systems, science, and dream states.
Drawing on memories of the upper deck of a Dublin bus in the 1980s and ’90s, Morrissy uses this hazy, liminal space as a lens to examine GOD.
Themes of transcendence and altered states are central to Morrissy’s reflections. Religious references in both artists’ works, from fish and bread to altar-like structures, coexist with scientific precision and anarchist ideas, inviting reflection on the title GOD as a space for the unknown.
Seeing God is available to read in full here. This latest response continues Morrissy’s practice of bridging the visual and literary arts, following her reflections on Aleka’s Cailleacha agus Bandia and the Waystation exhibition.
The MLP x The Complex residency is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.
